Letter to President of Marquette University in Support of Dan Maguire

May 11, 2007

Robert Wild, S.J.
President, Marquette University
PO Box 1881
Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53201-1881

Dear Robert Wild,

The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and its Religious Leadership Council, the Religious Institute on Sexual Morality, Justice, and Healing, and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America Clergy Advisory Board, are writing to express our great support for and admiration of the work and teachings of Dr. Daniel C. Maguire.

As religious leaders who work to promote healthy sexuality and reproductive justice, we applaud Dr. Maguire's efforts to explore and to teach the rich variety of religious wisdom on issues of sexualities, abortion, and contraception from the perspectives of a wide range of faith groups. We have all made extensive use of Dr. Maguire's writings on these topics in our work, and we find that his explorations of these issues are always met with appreciation from our clergy colleagues of all faiths. His work is of paramount importance to those of us who engage spiritually in education and advocacy for sexual health and reproductive justice. His writings are simply a discussion of the choices all people of God make on a daily basis.

We understand that Dr. Maguire's work has recently come under fire from certain Roman Catholic bishops. We urge Marquette University to stand by Dr. Maguire publicly and defend his right to research and teach the wide range of religious teachings on reproductive justice, including the variety of Catholic teachings and theology on these issues. The ability of one to do honest theology has always allowed for a conscientious pursuit of the truth, and this has always been accepted. Even a church-funded university has an academic responsibility that must transcend the parameters of faith. Marquette is not a seminary, and must therefore act in accordance with the protocols of academe and allow Dr. Maguire to continue his work and publish that which helps us all become better human beings.

Respectfully,

Rev. Carlton W. Veazey
