As Religions Grapple With Sexual Diversity

One of our Participating Scholars, Mary Hunt, opens a recent provocative article with this statement. "Queer theory is about as welcome in traditional religious circles as the proverbial bull in the china shop. Just when mainline churches, synagogues, mosques, and covens are beginning to grapple with the reality of their gay and lesbian adherents, along come bi-sexual people to complicate the categories. Then, when those folks are at least part of the fray, if not part of the community, transgender people upset the apple cart entirely by offering a whole new way of thinking about sex and gender. Strategies for change are complicated at best, especially given the fact that many denominations are just beginning to take seriously that diversity is here to stay."

The article in its entirety can be found in Literature and Theology, Vol. 15, No. 3.
